“
“Age Concern Epsom & Ewell didn’t just offer help, they brought companionship into my life.” – George, Befriending Client
At Age Concern Epsom & Ewell, our Befriending Service connects volunteers with older people who may be feeling lonely or isolated. Just an hour or two a week can make a big difference – bringing companionship, laughter, and friendship into someone’s life.
How It Works
- Initial Visit: Our team visits each client to get to know them, understand their interests, and discuss what kind of friend they’d like.
- Careful Matching: We then pair them with a volunteer befriender who shares similar interests or outlooks.
- Regular Visits: The befriender visits weekly (or as agreed), offering conversation, company, and a friendly face.
- Ongoing Support: Our Social Support and Volunteer Coordinator’s stay in touch to ensure both the client and volunteer are happy and supported.
It’s a simple process, but the friendships that grow are truly life-changing.

George and Claire’s Story
When George, aged 105, was matched with Claire in 2023, neither expected how special their connection would become.
George, a former Royal Artillery signaller during WWII, has lived a long and fascinating life. Now living independently, he looks forward to Claire’s weekly visits – full of laughter, stories, and companionship.
“Claire’s visits bring a real spark to my week. We laugh, we chat, and it’s just lovely to have someone to share life’s stories with,” says George.
Claire adds:
“George is such a character – spending time with him is so rewarding. We’re always learning from each other.”
Their friendship, made possible by those who support Age Concern Epsom & Ewell, is a wonderful example of how befriending brings people together.
